LIGHTen The Load Bags

About this program
Every Young Adult Deserves a Strong Start
Many young adults aging out of foster care face independence alone, often starting life with just a trash bag of belongings. LIGHTen the Load Bags provide practical essentials for their first home, packed with care to show love, dignity, and belonging. Each bag reminds them they matter and are not facing this transition alone.

Supporting the first step
Each Bag Holds Hope and Dignity
For many young adults aging out of foster care, the transition into independence happens abruptly and alone. On their 18th birthday, support systems often disappear overnight. Too many step into adulthood carrying everything they own in a trash bag, with no family to call, no safety net to fall back on, and no idea where to begin. LIGHTen the Load Bags were created to meet them in that moment.

Packed With Care, Packed With Love
Each bag is more than a collection of essential items—it is a tangible expression of love, dignity, and belonging. It says:
“You matter. You are not forgotten. You are not walking into this season alone.”
Our LIGHTen the Load Bags are intentionally and prayerfully packed to help meet the immediate needs of young adults as they move into their first apartment, dorm, or living situation. Inside each bag are practical essentials many of us take for granted—items that can feel overwhelming or impossible to afford when starting from nothing.
What’s Inside a LIGHTen the Load Bag?
Each bag typically includes:
- Bedding essentials (air mattress, sheets, blankets, pillow)
- Hygiene and personal care items
- Towels and bathroom necessities
- Kitchen basics
- Shower curtain and shower hooks
- A Bible and devotional with handwritten notes of encouragement
- A journal
Every item is chosen with intention—not just to meet physical needs, but to bring dignity and offer hope.
Our long-term vision
An Environment
Built for Belonging
We plan to develop a campus-style community of up to 16 individual dwelling spaces, designed around a family model with on-site house parents available 24/7. This campus will offer structure, safety, and daily relational support while allowing each resident their own personal space.

Christ-Centered Family Environment
Residents are immersed in a family-style environment where growth happens through relationships. Mentors and staff help guide youth as they learn essential life skills such as:
- Cooking, cleaning, and personal care
- Health, nutrition, and wellness
- Social and emotional development
- Education and career preparation
- Budgeting, finances, and time management
- Parenting and healthy relationship skills
Family fellowship is woven into weekly routines and may include shared meals, community activities, outings, and holiday celebrations. Life skills training, mentorship, and discipleship are all components of the program, ensuring each resident is fully supported and equipped for long-term success.
Additional “pod” model
In addition to the campus model, we are also developing a “pod model” that can be implemented in smaller communities. These pods would include a few individual dwelling spaces surrounding a shared communal area and would be partnered with a local church that actively provides mentorship, ministry, and relational support. This model allows the program to be flexible, scalable, and deeply rooted in the local church and functioning as a Christ-centered, para-church ministry within the community.
Personalized Path to Independence
This is a progressive, individualized program, not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each resident receives a tailored plan based on their needs, goals, and stage of life. Together, we set clear milestones that help them move step-by-step toward independence.
Housing contributions are based on income. As residents meet their individualized goals and demonstrate readiness, they progress toward independent living. When they move out, we ensure they are connected with a long-term mentor and a local church family, because family and belonging do not end when housing does. Former residents are always welcome at family gatherings, celebrations, and holidays.

Support Beyond Housing
We will also offer portions of the program, mentorship, life skills training, discipleship, and family fellowship to young adults who have aged out of foster care but do not require housing. Our heart is to walk alongside as many youth as possible, meeting them where they are and surrounding them with the support they need.
More than a bag
A Message of Belonging
For many recipients, this may be the first gift they’ve ever received simply because someone cared, not because they earned it, qualified for it, or asked for help. Along with practical support, each bag carries a deeper message:
You are seen. You are loved. Your life has value. Your story isn’t over.

A First Step Toward Community
Faith-filled encouragement is woven throughout the bag, offering gentle reminders that God is present in this new chapter and that their future holds promise, even if the path ahead feels uncertain.
LIGHTen the Load Bags often serve as an entry point into ongoing relationships and support. Through this simple act of generosity, doors are opened to mentorship, life skills training, discipleship, and connection to a faith-filled community that continues walking alongside them beyond the initial transition.
What begins as a bag of essentials often becomes the first step toward stability, confidence, and hope for the future.
Our Approach
Building Family, Belonging, and a Path Forward is at the heart of everything we do. Our belief: every young person deserves a place to belong and people who walk with them toward independence. Transparent exists to create a Christ-centered environment where youth aging out of foster can gain independence and are supported, equipped, and empowered to thrive.
Together, we can LIGHTen the load and help young adults step into their future with hope, courage, and the knowledge that they are deeply loved.
Make Your Impact
